Die Kompaktkassette war der Motor der Cassette Culture. Nahezu jeder Haushalt weltweit hatte ein Gerät mit dem man Sprache, Musik und Field-Recordings aufnehmen und wiedergeben konnte. Mit dem Walkman wurde die Kassette mobil. Ohne große Vorfinanzierung konnte eine Kassettenproduktion skalierbar veröffentlicht werden. Das Format war einfach zu verpacken und billig im Versand. Die Vervielfältigung erfolgte „at home“ mit mehreren Kassettendecks.

The compact cassette was the engine of Cassette Culture. Nearly every household in the world had a device to record and play. The cassette became mobile with the Walkman. Without large pre-financing, a cassette production could be scalably published. The format was easy to pack and cheap in shipping. The duplication took place at home with several cassette decks.
